The midday light came in crooked through the hotel curtains.
Javi opened his eyes with a pasty mouth and a headache that pounded to the rhythm of a song that was still playing inside his skull. The first thing he noticed was the heat of another body pressed against his. The second was that that body did not have a flat chest.
He sat up with a jolt.
Beside him, Toni was sleeping face-down, hair longer than normal spread across the pillow. When Javi touched his shoulder, Toni growled and turned… and two soft breasts moved with the gesture. He opened his eyes, squinted from the hangover, and then opened them wide.
There was a very long silence.
“Javi…” he said in a voice higher than normal. “Why do I have tits?”
Javi ran his hands over his face.
“I don’t know, man. I have no fucking idea.”
The two of them stayed sitting on the bed, naked from the waist up, looking at each other as if the other were a mistake of the universe. The room smelled of alcohol, of sex, and of that thick hangover that a night leaves when you go too hard on karaoke.
“What do you remember?” Toni finally asked, crossing his arms over his chest in a clumsy way.
Javi squinted, searching through the fog.
“We arrived with Mónica and a friend. We ordered the first bottle. You went up to sing that one you always go off-key on… the ‘Me rehúso’ one. I was dying of laughter. Then more alcohol. Challenges. Every time someone picked a cheesy song, a shot. Every time someone got too dramatic, another one.”
“The girls got pissed,” Toni added. “Mónica said we were pathetic. They left. And we… kept going.”
Javi nodded slowly.
“Yeah. We ordered another bottle. And then you put on that song. The usual one. The one you put on when you’re too drunk.”
Toni frowned.
“Which one?”
“‘Cómo te atreves.’ The Carlos Rivera one. You sang the whole thing. Even the final falsetto. And after that… I don’t know. You put it on again. And again. Like you didn’t want it to stop.”
Toni stayed quiet for a second. The melody gave a tug at his memory, blurry but real.
“We were listening to it on loop,” he murmured. “In the place… and then here. In the room. You had it on your phone while… while whatever happened was happening.”
Javi got up, still in his underwear, and searched through the clothes on the floor. He found both phones. His was dead. Toni’s still had battery.
“Maybe there’s something.”
He unlocked Toni’s phone and opened the gallery. There was only one recent video. The thumbnail was already enough to freeze both of them. Javi swallowed and hit play.
The video started with the camera shaking. In the background, clear and distorted by the phone speakers, that exact song was playing: Cómo te atreves. The same one they had been listening to all night.
On the screen you could see Javi, completely naked, thrusting hard into someone who was on all fours on the bed. That someone had a woman’s body: wide hips, breasts moving with the rhythm, hair stuck with sweat. And the voice coming out of that mouth was Toni’s, high and broken with pleasure, half-singing the lyrics between moans:
“Cómo te atreves… aah… harder… fuck, Javi… don’t stop…”
The Toni in the video pushed his ass back to meet every thrust while the song kept playing without mercy. Javi grabbed his breasts and talked dirty to him, and the other just asked for more, mixing the lyrics with pleas.
The video lasted almost twelve minutes. When it ended, the silence in the room was absolute. Only their breathing could be heard.
Toni was the first to speak. His voice came out low:
“Now… now I remember.”
Javi ran a hand through his hair, without looking at him.
“Toni, I… fuck, I’m sorry. I was too drunk, that song, the alcohol… I didn’t mean to…”
“Don’t apologize,” Toni cut him off, still looking at the black screen. “Really. You don’t have to.”
There was another pause. Toni bit his lip and spoke without raising his eyes:
“We have to find a way to change back. This can’t stay like this.”
Javi nodded right away, too quickly.
“Yeah. Of course. We’ll look. There has to be something.”
Toni nodded too. He got out of bed with the new body still clumsy and started picking up the clothes from the floor. While he got dressed, the melody of Cómo te atreves kept turning in his head, mixed with the sensation of his friend’s hands on his hips and the way he had begged in the video.
He said nothing.
He wasn’t going to say it.
He just put the phone in his pocket and thought, with a clarity that scared him a little:
First we pretend we want to change back.
After that… we’ll see.
Because the song was still playing inside his head.
And this time he didn’t want it to stop.
The End.
